'Shivaree'
Album Review

If Kill Bill: Vol. 1's shining audio star was the 5.6.7.8's loopy surf-rock ditty "Woo Hoo," then Vol. 2's is Shivaree's sultry "Goodnight Moon."

You'd recognize it if you heard it.

That bluesy trio responsible for such an organic, slinky slice of Americana has returned for its third release, Who's Got Trouble?

Who's Got Trouble? is a decent album that occasionally sounds straight out of a road-side hoedown, and at some other other times reverberates with classy, Billie Holiday-esque seduction.

Who's Got Trouble? was released on Zoe Records.

This is the very same label that has put out stuff by the Cowboy Junkies, Kathleen Edwards and the Nields -- a fitting combination of comparisons for Shivaree's smoky alt-country sound that oscillates between candid and vaguely creepy.

Shivaree may have some cool instrumentation (damn, who don't love a good banjo?), but the group owes most of its appeal to its singer and songwriter, Ambrosia Parsley.

Parsley's little girl voice (more Jolie Holland than Joanna Newsom) manages to come across as equally sugary and husky.

This is particularly apparent on standout tracks like the mischievous "Little Black Mess" and dusty "I Close My Eyes," the album's hookiest song.

However, there are a couple clunkers on which the band forgets that "haunting" does not have to mean "comatose" ("Lost in a Dream" and "Baby Girls" are good for sleeping to, but not much else).

Shivaree could be a little pluckier or more musically adventurous, but its atmospheric twang should be a refreshing and comfortable listen for any fans of jazzy, soundtrack-ready alt-country.
