It's that time of year again, and I'm not just talking about the season. It's winter in State College, and what does it mean? It means yet another year of icy roads, sidewalks, parking lots and stairs. We had a pretty lucky December. It was pretty warm, overall, and there was no snow or ice to speak of. But guess what, Penn State? January's back with a vengeance. I grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. I fully understand all of the issues that come with clearing roads and salting and everything. I also understand that State College isn't Buffalo, and has never dealt with snow and ice extremely well. But it is ridiculous that the Stadium West parking lot has been a sheet of ice since Monday. Was the snow over the weekend anything to clear? No, it wasn't. But once cars start driving over that snow and crushing it, it becomes more and more dangerous.
We're not allowed to be parked at the Bryce Jordan Center Stadium West lot between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. to begin with, so why can't that time be used to make the lot more safe? I understand that other areas of campus are a priority, and for the most part they were taken care of well on Monday. But by Wednesday, the lot should have been at least salted. It's snowing again. I've already seen people fall, and I've fallen in the middle of Curtin Road. Thankfully no cars were coming. Please, Penn State, can something be done differently this year?
