Fraternity on re-organization status after fight

Collegian Staff Writers

For the rest of this semester, Kappa Delta Rho fraternity, 420 E. Prospect Ave., will be on re-organization status resulting from various violations committed last semester.

Kappa Delta Rho President Joseph Flynn said the main reason for the fraternity's status was a fight that happened during Homecoming weekend between fraternity members and members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, 417 E. Prospect Ave. Tim Wagner, president of Pi Kappa Alpha, did not return a phone call for comment.

"We have not made an arrest yet, but we believe we are going to make an arrest," State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro said.

Flynn said the fraternity was placed on probation as mandated by the National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho after the physical altercation with Pi Kappa Alpha. Though Flynn said the reorganization status was only for this semester, Joseph Rees, the national fraternity's executive director and executive vice president, said it would continue into the fall. "The Zeta provisional chapter can petition for full chapter status in December 2005. After a full member review, 32 members were moved to alumni status after an interview," he said.

Students on alumni status may not live in the house or attend social functions for the next four years.

"The national fraternity along with Penn State Fraternity and Sorority Life will help to provide educational programming for the chapter," Rees added.

According to a sanctions letter from Rees, the chapter was placed on probationary status from Nov. 9 to Dec. 9, and then placed on suspension status from Dec. 9 to Dec. 15.

"We violated our probation because we had our formal at the wrong time," Flynn said. "Things are looking up. We had a board meeting with the national fraternity board of directors and we are ready to re-establish ourselves."

Rees' letter states that while on re-organization status, the chapter will not host, co-host, sponsor or co-sponsor any social events in which alcohol is present, and they must provide guest lists for all social events to the national headquarters. Eighty-five percent of chapter members must also participate in four risk management educational programs: two this semester and two in the fall. Before the end of this semester, the chapter must organize community service events where each member can complete 10 hours of community service, not including participation in the Interfraternity Council/ Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

IFC President Brian Bertges said it is unfortunate that any organization has to go through a review.

"The IFC, the university and the national headquarters are working in collaboration to support ... leadership within Kappa Delta Rho. In order to be productive and move forward, we need the right leadership and composition of the organization," Bertges said. "As the IFC, we need to strive for accountability and respect. Overall, the leaders of the greek community have the goal to hold chapters to values and standards."

Rees said the local chapter needs to be re-organized because it has diverged too far from the national fraternity's ideals.

"We're hoping to help change the culture of the chapter," Rees said. "The ultimate goal is the long-term success of the chapter."
