Academic Assembly debates GHA credit
Collegian Staff Writer

The Undergraduate Student Government Academic Assembly members agreed yesterday the health and physical activity (GHA) requirement for graduation is beneficial for students.

"We shouldn't get rid of it," said Kelly Gregg, a representative for the College of Arts and Architecture.

"In America, obesity has become an epidemic, and [GHA] promotes a healthier lifestyle," Gregg added.

The GHA is a three-credit requirement students must meet to graduate. The problem with fulfilling this requirement is that the number of credits for each GHA course varies, from one- to three-credit classes being offered, Academic Assembly President Mark Levin said.

"We should look into making the classes 1.5 credits or 3.0 credits," Tammy Rishel, vice president of programming, said.

Jeff Markowitz, Council of Commonwealth Student Governments academic affairs director, said streamlining the credits across the GHA requirement would be hard to do.

The assembly also discussed the issue of students having a problem graduating, because they are half a credit short.

Levin said there aren't any advanced plans to get rid of the requirement, but the assembly focused on the varying credit allocation for GHA classes.
