Board overestimates Pell grant problems
Once again, the Board of Opinion puts into print their obvious political bias. It really is a shame because many students likely do not have the time or desire to check other sources to hear both sides of an issue. Their latest attack on anything Republican is the Pell Grant cuts. Nowhere in the article do they mention how much money will be cut from an individual student. They throw out big numbers like 1 million students will see less money, and 80,000 will be cut from the program. Why don't they mention how much these students stand to lose? They don't mention it because the amount is only $300 a year, and it is only cut from those just barely eligible for a Pell Grant at all. The saved money is then diverted to students far less fortunate. They claim that this $300 will result in more college dropouts, and fewer students attempting to enter college. If $300, from students barely eligible for the grant, keeps them out of college, it is from lack of desire, not money. There are always student loans available, which is how I paid for almost all of my education. Amazingly, the Board of Opinion also forgot to mention that during the Bush administration, Pell Grant funding is up 42 percent. Matthew Glunt
