Former Lions receiver to coach all-star game

Former Penn State standout wide receiver Terry Smith is a member of the coaching staff for the East All-Stars in tomorrow's Fifth Annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

The contest is being played at the Alamodome in San Antonio and will be televised by NBC at 1 p.m. ET.

Smith, who lettered from 1988-91 with the Nittany Lions, is the head football coach and athletic director at Gateway High School in Pittsburgh.

Smith recently completed his third season as head coach, leading Gateway to an 11-2 record and WPIAL AAAA runners-up. Smith stands sixth on Penn State's career receptions list (108) and is seventh in career receiving yardage with 1,825 yards.

He tallied 15 career receiving touchdowns. As a senior in 1991, Smith broke school records with 55 catches for 846 yards and eight scores, helping Penn State to an 11-2 record and a Fiesta Bowl victory over Tennessee.

His 55 receptions remain third highest in a season in Penn State annals.

Smith is also the stepfather of Penn State freshman Justin King, who enrolled at the school this spring.
