'Bachlorette' has NY state of mind

Collegian Staff Writer

The only good thing to ever come out of ABC's hit reality show The Bachelor is the follow up hit series The Bachelorette.

The bachelorette is often a woman who appeared on The Bachelor and didn't receive the coveted "final rose."

For example, bachelorette Trista was the runner-up for the very first bachelor, Alex; bachelorette Meredith was one of the very many girls who fell in love but was cast aside by bachelor Bob. This time around ABC has put a spin on this season's The Bachelorette; the new leading lady, Jennifer Schefft, won when she appeared on The Bachelor and was engaged to the heir of the Firestone fortune, Andrew Firestone. The whirlwind engagement ended mutually after a few months -- as it seems all romances that come out of The Bachelor do.

Not only is Schefft different in the respect that she has already won The Bachelor previously; she is also the first bachelorette who was involved in the casting of her 25 bachelors. Along with the few changes behind the scenes, Schefft and the other bachelors are taking the show off of the West Coast to New York City, a place where Schefft says she feels more comfortable since she feels like a big city girl at heart. Schefft, who now lives in Chicago and works as a party planner, is looking for more than a husband on this season's show -- she is looking for a best friend, she said on Monday's two-hour premiere.

So far this show has proven to be everything and more than the commercials in the last few weeks suggested. As with all shows from this family, the commercials always claims that the rose ceremony is the most intense so far. On Monday, the commercials couldn't have been more right. Bachelor David, from Chicago, found the evening to be too much for him, and passed out during the rose ceremony. After he collected himself, and got a drink of water, the rose ceremony continued. Schefft picked 14 bachelors to continue on to the next episode, while her two best friends, disguised as cocktail waitresses during the evening's meet-and-greet, got to pick the 15th bachelor. Unfortunately, Bachelor David did not receive a rose from Jen or her two friends. Back to Chicago he went.

However, of the 15 men left, it seems that tension will be running quite high in the bachelor pad, since the bachelors have a lot more differences on this season than ever before. One bachelor is straight from Paris, while another is a professional surfer. Perhaps the most controversial bachelor in the house is Jason, a 29-year-old motivational speaker who is hoping that Schefft is the woman he can finally lose his virginity to. In the coming episodes viewers can expect the usual tears, kisses and cheesy moments. What makes this season stand out?

Well, New York City has a lot to offer, as does the New York Police Department. That's right, the police will be called in quite a few times in this season, and Schefft even states that one of the men in the house has her fearing for her life.

No worries: Jen promises that there will be a wedding.
