NEWS

Construction plans for a new movie theater downtown are scheduled to begin this year, while the year-old Premiere Theatres already has plans to expand.

The decision made in December by the State College Borough Council to increase property taxes could mean rent increases for students and eventual tax breaks for permanent borough residents.

The University Advising Council has asked Academic Assembly members to begin making recommendations about improving the promotion of academic integrity, specifically in regards to Internet plagiarizing. As the use of the Internet increases, the administration has become concerned with plagiarism becoming easier.

Penn State has yet to rewrite its non-discrimination policy despite a lawsuit filed last semester by the DiscipleMakers Christian Fellowship against Penn State President Graham Spanier and other university officials.

As a New England native, Keith Trasko loves snow and has been skiing since he was 17. But he has never been to Tussey Mountain, and this semester he wanted that to change.

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) may face a reallocation of its state funds if Pennsylvania's House of Representatives decides to approve a private loan company's updated proposal.

While Penn State administrators have considered eliminating phones in dorm rooms, changes discussed at an early December meeting will not take place anytime soon.

The new semester has signaled many changes for the Interfraternity Council, including a new president and some new policies.

A New Jersey man is currently being held on $1 million bail after being arrested yesterday by the Centre County Drug Task Force and charged with possession and delivery of cocaine and heroin.

Many students were left with one question after hearing yesterday that Michael Chertoff was President Bush's pick for the new Homeland Security chief.

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate unanimously passed legislation to extend their support to students affected by the recent tsunamis at their first meeting of the new year.

Yesterday's first snowstorm of the season was also the first ever for exchange student Piyamas Raorungrot of Thailand.

SPORTS

Forgive Rene Portland for telling all of the doubters "I told you so."

The World University Games (WUG) may have just gotten under way, but they've been generating controversy for the last five months.

"Road warriors" is not a term that would aptly describe the Penn State women's basketball team's performance this season. Only three of the Lady Lions' eight wins have come outside of the cozy comforts of the Bryce Jordan Center, but things are looking up.

They're not supposed to win.

ARTS

Being a Penn State theatre major is kind of like majoring in English or underwater basket weaving -- parents are bound to scowl and ask, "Now what are you going to do with that?"

Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., will feature Twinz. Specials include $1 off mixed drinks (231-4745).
