Four Penn State seniors going to all-star games

A quartet of Penn Staters have accepted invitations to play in football all-star games this month.

Safety Andrew Guman, fullback Paul Jefferson, quarterback Zack Mills and linebacker Derek Wake will be playing in four different games, three of which are scheduled to be televised.

Guman will play in the 80th East-West Shrine Game, which will be played Saturday at SBC Park in San Francisco. The contest will begin at 2 p.m. ET and be televised by ESPN. A native of Allentown, Guman was a two-year starter and leader of a defense that allowed only 14 touchdowns in 11 games and ranked in the top 10 nationally in total, scoring and pass defense.

Jefferson will participate in the Seventh Villages Gridiron Classic on Saturday. The contest will be played at The Villages Polo Stadium in The Villages, Fla., at 11 a.m. and will air on ESPN2. A product of Wilkes-Barre, Jefferson played in every game with nine starts at fullback this past season. He served primarily as a blocking back and receiver and was selected an honorable mention All-American by Pro Football Weekly.

Mills is playing in the Second Las Vegas All-American Classic, set for Saturday, Jan. 22. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. ET. The Ijamsville, Md., standout was a three-year starter and leader for the offense. He was elected a co-captain and named the Hall Foundation Award winner as Penn State's senior MVP. Mills owns or shares 18 Penn State passing and total offense records. He was 155 for 268 for 1,722 yards with nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions this past season.

Wake will play in the 59th Hula Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 22. The game is set for 7 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN2. Wake also was a three-year starter and team co-captain.

Strom earns first career Big Ten weekly honor

The Big Ten Conference has selected Jess Strom (Munhall) as its women's basketball player of the week. Strom won the award after a stellar two-game stretch last week that included a career game at then-No. 17 Iowa.

Strom's play against Iowa and Wisconsin helped the Lady Lions (8-6, 3-0) win back-to-back games on the road for the first time this season, and stay perfect in Big Ten action.

Strom scored a career-high 29 points against the Hawkeyes, and tied a career high with five 3-pointers as she led the Lady Lions to a 77-71 victory over the nation's last unbeaten team. Strom added four assists and five rebounds, but more importantly was a near-perfect 8-of-9 from the free throw line, which helped seal the win down the stretch.

Strom carried her momentum into Saturday's game at Wisconsin, which was broadcast live on CBS. The senior point guard led Penn State to a 67-58 victory with 16 points and six assists.

In all, Strom averaged 22.5 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals, finished 14-of-15 (.933) from the free throw line and 7-of-14 from beyond the arc.
