Real love more than just chemical signals
As I read through Elizabeth Hunt's opinion column ("Love may get in way of ultimate life fulfillment," Dec. 10), I couldn't help but feeling nauseous. Love as defined by the article is merely a surge in chemicals in your brain and body that makes you feel euphoric. The article even says it's a "high" to be in love. It sickens me that love has been reduced to a form of lust/infatuation in the author's mind. Love by my definition is very narrow. Love is a verb meaning one will do anything for the person one loves. That euphoric feeling you notice when you are talking to some hot guy you are interested in is not love. It is essential that a relationship consist of two individuals working toward bettering each other's lives. From the one night stand to marriage, making each other's lives better should always be part of the relationship. Hunt asks, "Will that love guide us to what we ultimately strive for as beings or does that love sidetrack the weak and vulnerable from what is at hand?" The answer is it is your responsibility to attain goals you want. Blaming love for success or failure is childish. Mark Basile
