Man's body found by PSU Lion Shrine
Penn State University Police found a body on Jan. 3 at about 6 p.m. in the area south of the Carpenter Building, near the Nittany Lion Shrine.
According to a press release, Oren J. Kruise III, 30, of Altoona was discovered after someone called the police and reported that he believed Kruise might have committed suicide near the shrine.
Results of an autopsy performed last Tuesday by the Centre County Coroner determined the cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
University Police Supervisor Dwight Smith said that despite some continuing routine investigative measures, the case is officially closed. He said Kruise was a former Penn State student.
Overdose victim found in parking deck
The Centre County Emergency Communications Center responded to a call regarding an unresponsive 19-year-old female in a vehicle parked on the third level of the HUB parking deck last Wednesday, according to the State College Police Department.
A Penn State University Police report said the individual suffered from a heroin overdose. University Police said they responded to the call and University Ambulance Service transported the woman to Mount Nittany Medical Center. The woman's identity and condition were not released.
University Police Officer Ben Hess said the incident is currently under investigation by the Centre County Drug Task Force, State College Police and the University Police.
Locals get power back after ice storms
Power to about 14,325 Allegheny Power customers was restored after severe ice storms swept the Centre County region late last week. Three hundred customers are still without power.
Allegheny Power spokesman Steve Gale said restoring power to customers has taken longer than usual because of more individual power outages, as opposed to larger areas.
He added that power crews have experienced difficulties accessing power lines in some areas. The remaining 100 customers without power would most likely have it restored today.
