I am concerned about the climate of our campus and community beliefs about acquaintance rape and sexual assault. I am glad to see the Collegian covering movements to end sexual violence, like Lindsay Keiter's photo gallery, but I am critical of the Collegian's reporting sexual violence on campus. This semester, there have been sexual assaults happening at the same alarming number as last fall; yet people seem to disbelieve this statistic because it isn't in the news. Just because the Collegian is not reporting about rape does not mean it isn't happening. Although the Collegian uses information from the police, not every person chooses to report a sexual crime committed against them. Even if they do report it, people do not notice a paragraph in the police log about an attempted rape, indecent assault or sexual harassment. This semester, there has been a number of acquaintance rapes that have received less coverage compared to the stranger rapes last year. My complaint against the media is the unwillingness to consider all kinds of sexual violence newsworthy. Language used can be re-traumatizing. The challenges for survivors to speak out and take action heighten when taking on power-holding agencies. I worry our community is ignoring the fact that women are being hurt by rape. If we do not take action to support and believe them, we will continue to reinforce these sexist, violent and criminal actions.
