'Music' people need to be less obsessed
Wednesday's senior column ("Penn State life gains meaning through music scene" Wed., Dec. 8) regarding Penn State's music scene brings to mind the obsession some of the students at Penn State seem to have with listening to music. The degree to which some college students here listen to their favorite music is nothing short of addiction. Everyone has met these people. They can't walk to class without headphones and spend hours of their time listening to the same songs. While loving music is one thing, constantly tuning out the real world to drift off to the same rock band all day and all night is not healthy. With the high cost of tuition and with opportunities to get involved in activities abound, I can't think of a worse waste of one's college career than sitting around with the same obscure band playing. This is not to mention the rudeness that results from the music obsession. Music "aficionados" are constantly blasting the same music from their rooms, and headphone-equipped students have no regard for other walkers on campus. Turn off the music for a bit, and get back in touch with the real world. Rocco Panella
