In response to a column yesterday in the Daily Collegian ("Best teams still not noticed" Thurs., Dec. 9), I first off want to applaud the efforts of Lawrence Fischer to note the accomplishments of some of the lesser-known teams at Penn State. I enjoyed reading about the Icers, a team certainly deserving praise, as well as the women's soccer and volleyball teams, also excellent programs. I too have enjoyed in my years at Penn State attending sporting events of teams that are not necessarily the most popular or well covered. I have been to both fencing and water polo matches and have come away highly impressed. I did feel there was an intentional slight directed at the women's rugby team. Fischer notes that the Icers have over 1,000 paying fans watching its games, and then he says, "When the women's rugby team gets that at a match, drop me an e-mail." Last May, at our national championship match (which we won), we had well over 1,000 paying fans in attendance. Maybe if the Daily Collegian had bothered to cover this event you, as assistant sports editor, would have known this.
