Looking for a great way to start off the holiday season, or just need a break from studying for exams?
Look no further.
From midnight to 2:15 a.m. tonight, the Penn State Ice Pavillion will be holding an event called Penn Skates.
Admission is $5, which includes a raffle ticket, ice time, skate rentals and free food.
The raffle's prizes include Philadelphia 76ers tickets, signed Pittsburgh Steelers paraphernalia, Altoona Curve merchandise, Penn State merchandise and gift certificates.
"Penn Skates was part of a class assignment I put together for a public event," Jennifer Pellegrine (senior-communication arts and sciences) said. "I thought it would be fun to put on a charity event."
All proceeds from the event will go to local charity, The Second Mile, which helps provide children positive role models and support.
"We are hoping to raise more than $1,000 for the charity," Pellegrine said.
Wal-Mart, Giant and Weis have all donated food for the event.
"There are a number of organizations that are supporting this event financially," Michael Tumolo (graduate-communication arts and sciences) said. "But the event was designed specifically for the purpose of a project for my class Communication Arts and Sciences 498A (Public Argumentation and Advocacy)."
CAS 498A is a special topics course on democratic theory in practice.
"One of the goals in the design of this project was to show that we can enjoy ourselves while being civically engaged," Tumolo said.
The event will take place immediately after the Penn State Icers' game.
"We are hoping that a lot of people just stay after the game," Pellegrine said. "I really hope a lot of people show up for this event. I feel that this is an awesome charity that helps a lot of children, but it will also be a lot of fun."
Tickets for the event can be bought at the door, and raffle tickets in addition to the one received with the ticket will be sold throughout the night.
