New Year's resolution: Be yourself, with style

Collegian Staff Writer

As I have tried to reflect over the course of the semester, fashion can be many things: sensation, expression, experimentation, art, self-discovery, self-indulgence, disaster and freedom.

It's a never-ending revolving door of styles that are created each season by the opinions of worldwide trendsetters and their groupies.

As a loyal groupie and an aspiring trendsetter, I take my job to share with you all the goings-on of fashion with the utmost seriousness.

And as new seasons bring new sparkly shoes, sweaters and Gap commercials (a.k.a. more reasons to idolize Sarah Jessica Parker), new years bring New Year's resolutions.

And, because I'm just so giving, I have taken the liberty to pre-make you five "fashion" resolutions (you can thank me later).

Now, pick up your favorite shoes and swear that you will:

5. Not visit the tanning booth constantly this winter. I know there is a lack of sun and being pale is not gonna help you get any; but looking Oompa-Loompa orange is way worse. So lay off.

4. At least twice a week wear somethin' hot to class. We may be killing the other schools in the party realm but we are definitely getting crazy spanked in the daytime dress code -- or lack thereof.

Sweats and hoodies, granted, are the unofficial uniform of college; but they're not so hoppin'. I firmly believe that when you're looking good, you're feeling good, so put a little effort into your dress and step it up a notch.

3. Not do like a hussy and wear a pound of makeup to class.

Makeup is a fine and highly enjoyable art that is most beneficial when appropriately used to match each situation. If you've been wearing the same makeup to class as you do to go out, then gurl, you just ain't puttin' it on right.

Don't use liquid liners for daytime casual looks; use pencil liners so that you look naturally beautiful. Also, since it's winter, switch your daytime colors appropriately to warmer colors to flatter you instead of bright colors that accentuate the dark circles and red noses that tend to invade winter faces.

2. Stop wearing the Uggs with mini skirts. It's sloppy, frumpy and dumpy. Trendy shoes are supposed to be flattering and attractive. Uggs, on the contrary, make feet look chubby, especially when worn with bare legs. I don't care if they were $160 and you want to wear them all the time. The look is way done and out -- not that it ever looked good.

1. If you follow even one piece of my advice, let it be this one. Above all, promise to be yourself in all realms of life.

Wear, do, think and be only how you -- and nobody else -- want. There is nothing more fashionable, attractive, beautiful, or glamorous than the confidence to be yourself.

And if that really means doing the opposite of everything I just said then so be it. As long as it's you, I got your back.
