Kenny Rogers comes to BJC

For The Collegian

With four Christmas albums under his belt, it's no wonder Kenny Rogers is bringing the songs from those albums on the road this holiday season.

At 7:30 Sunday night, the Bryce Jordan Center will be hosting "Kenny Rogers & Friends Celebrating the Seasons."

"We've had quite a long relationship with Kenny Rogers," said Bernie Punt, marketing manager at the Bryce Jordan Center.

"He performed here back in 1996 and had one of our first Christmas concerts. It was such a success he came back in 1997. It is a tradition for him to tour here."

The "friends" Rogers is bringing to State College are country music favorites and Grammy winners Rebecca Lynn Howard and Billy Dean.

Also, the concert will feature a local choir and a selected few local children.

Rogers, who has been performing since the 1960s, has put out 61 albums and sold more than 150 million records.

He has had quite a lot of success when it comes to being a crossover artist and a lot of practice when it comes to Christmas music.

"I think it's cool that Kenny Rogers is coming to the Bryce Jordan Center," Nicole Cerrillos (junior-journalism) said.

"A Christmas concert is sure to get the whole town in the spirit for the holidays."

While stepping out of the public eye for a bit in the early nineties, Rogers took the time to work on his Christmas musical, The Toy Shoppe.

This off-Broadway production that Rogers starred in with Kelly Junkermann has been a hit all around the country.

Rogers also wrote the play himself.

The Toy Shoppe turns Rogers into Hank Longley as he and the audience join the other cast of characters to learn about love, faith and appreciation for all.

Billy Dean has also toyed around with a little acting in his day, however he is not a stranger to the country music scene.

Dean has been winning awards for his music since 1992 and he has recorded Christmas songs for numerous compilation albums.

This tour is not the first time Dean will be singing with Rogers either.

The two recorded "Buy Me a Rose" together for Rogers' album She Rides Wild Horses.

"I am Jewish, so I don't celebrate Christmas, but I have loved Kenny Rogers' song 'Buy Me a Rose' ever since it came out," Rachel Wasserman (junior-psychology) said.

If the boys on the tour are going to be buying roses, it will probably be for their only female performer, Rebecca Lynn Howard.

Howard is a newcomer to the country music business.

She broke onto the scene in 2002 with her popular song "Forgive."

You can expect this trio of friends to be performing all sorts of songs to get the audience into a cheerful Christmas mood.

Rogers' latest Christmas album was released on his own label Dreamcatcher Entertainment.

It is an eclectic mix of original Christmas songs along with a few traditional favorites.

"It's an all-new Christmas show. We're really excited about it," Punt said.

So if on your list of 'my favorite things' you have country music and the Christmas holiday, this concert is sure to be the perfect gift for you.
