"A couple of guys were rattled," Penn State guard Marlon Smith said after the game on the Penn State Radio Network. "We just had to go out there and relax because we were down but we weren't out of it yet. We fought back in the second half but it was a little to late."
Penn State finally scored its first points of the game at the 12:10 mark of the first half, on an Aaron Johnson three-pointer. Johnson finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
After the trey, the Lions went on a 12-4 run to bring them within nine at 21-12. Penn State went into the second half trailing by 10.
"We were very lax in every thing we were doing," DeChellis said. "We were very casual with the ball. I don't understand how we could be casual with the basketball. We weren't passing hard, cutting hard, screening hard, we weren't doing anything hard. We were just kinda out there and just playing to play instead of playing to win and that's a big, big difference."
Penn State came out much more aggressive in the second half. Smith made two consecutive 3-pointers to bring the Lions within six. He finished with 14 points on 4-for-7 shooting. Smith returned to the Lions' lineup after missing Saturday's matchup with Lock Haven due to an ankle injury. Smith tried to pick up the slack for freshman guard Mike Walker, who finally played like a freshman, as he was held scoreless against the Hoyas.
Penn State closed the gap to three with a free throw by Smith after an intentional foul. This should have been a momentum swing for the Lions, but it became the opposite as Georgetown went on a 9-0 run and never looked back.
Freshman Jeff Green recorded 18 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. Junior Brandon Bowman tabbed 28 points and five steals. Both players helped lead the Hoyas to the 13-point victory, which ended the Lions' four-game winning streak.
