Severs, Walters named Regional All-Americans

Penn State senior forward Chad Severs and junior midfielder David Walters were named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic Region All-Americans yesterday for their efforts in leading the Nittany Lions men's soccer team to a 10-4-8 record this past season.

Walters was named to the NSCAA first team, while Severs was named to the second team.

The duo brings Penn State's total number of Mid-Atlantic Region All-Americans to 55, including 25 under head coach Barry Gorman.

Severs who led Penn State with nine goals and 21 points this season, picked up his third career NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region All-America honor, becoming just the fifth Nittany Lion to accomplish the feat. He joins for Penn State greats Chris Bahr (1972, 73, 74), Jim Stamatis (1977, 78, 79), Troy Snyder (1984, 85, 86), and Stuart Reid (1993, 94, 95) as three-time Mid-Atlantic Region All Americans.

Walters, who had one goal and five points this season, garnered his second career regional accolade. He was named to the Mid-Atlantic Region second team in 2003. Walters quarterbacked the Penn State offense this season.

PSU All-Sports Museum welcomes 100,000 fan

A college ice hockey player from Canada has become the 100,000th visitor to the Penn State All-Sports Museum.

James Lebarron was among 30 players and coaches from the St. Clair College Ice Hockey Team that visited the museum Saturday, Dec. 4. The team from Windsor, Ontario was on campus to play a two-game series with the Penn State Icers. Lebarron is a sophomore forward on the team.

To mark the 100,000 visitor milestone, Lebarron was presented with various items of Penn State memorabilia courtesy of the Museum Gift Shop and the Penn State Book Store.

He and a companion also were invited to attend a future football or men's and women's basketball game as guests of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Nittany Lion Club. Admission to the museum is free.

Former Nittany Lion RB gets Hall induction

Former Penn State All-America halfback Lydell Mitchell will be among the honorees at today's National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Dinner.

Mitchell will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame with other members of the Class of 2004 at the National Football Foundation's 47th annual awards dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.

Mitchell will become the 19th member of the Penn State program to receive college football's ultimate honor, joining 14 other former players and four ex-Nittany Lion coaches.

Mitchell led the nation in touchdowns (29) and points scored (174) in 1971. He also set three NCAA season records during his superlative 1971 campaign - most touchdowns (29), most rushing touchdowns (26) and points scored (174) and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.

He still holds Penn State records for touchdowns in a season (29 in 1971), touchdowns in a career (41) and rushing touchdowns in a career (38) and his 246 career points scored rank fourth, the most among players other than kickers. His 1,567 yards rushing in 1971 stood as the Penn State season record for more than 30 years until Larry Johnson's 2,087-yard season in 2002.

Mitchell still stands sixth on the Penn State all-time rushing list with a career total of 2,934 yards, an outstanding average of 5.9 yards per carry. A 1971 first-team All-America selection by the AP, Football News and Gridiron Magazine, he had 15 career 100-yard rushing performances topped by a 209-yard effort against Maryland in 1971. His season (1,754 in 1971) and career (3,904) all-purpose yardage records still rank sixth and fourth, respectively, all-time at Penn State.
