Letter to the Editor
Letter does not treat Democrat views fairly

This is in response to Monday's letter ("U.S. needs to take all security measures" Mon., Dec. 6) by H. Josh Stanton and A.J. Fluehr. The excerpt quoted by the writers was not a direct quotation from Megan Green, and based on my own experiences with The Daily Collegian, there is a possibility that her statement was misconstrued. To judge the entire Democratic Party by one statement from a student club president is not only naïve, but ridiculous. Don't pretend your candidate has a mandate. A mandate for the president is achieved at 55 percent of the vote, not 51 percent. Which "drastic measures" of this administration will protect us? Tracking people's library habits? How about denying people the right to due process? How much further do we have to go in the erosion of liberties before you would consider us "safe"? After you've taken classes beyond PLSC 001, you'll see that sensationalistic statements go a long way in finger-pointing but offer few solutions. Your letter did nothing but sound the record of chest-thumping that has been emanating from the Republicans since Sept. 11. Instead of lampooning Democrats, why don't you explain why these "measures" are needed? Please take time to educate yourselves before offering advice to Democrats.
