News in brief

SUV hits man crossing Burrowes Street

A man was struck by a white Ford Explorer at about 4:20 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Burrowes Street and College Avenue, the State College Police Department said.

According to police documents, the pedestrian, State College resident Jesse Barlow, 49, was crossing south on Burrowes Street while the white "walk" light was flashing. At the same time, Tyrone resident Jill Boyles, 34, who was driving the Explorer, had a green light and turned left from Burrowes Street to College Avenue, at which point the vehicle struck Barlow.

Boyles told police Barlow was in her blind spot and she did not see him.

Police said that because Barlow fell to the ground and had cuts on his head, he was transported by Alpha Ambulance to Mount Nittany Medical Center.

Boyles' front car grill was cracked and she was charged with not obeying traffic signals.

Campus groups plan Hanukkah events

Chabad of Penn State will hold its fourth annual lighting of the nine-foot-tall menorah at 5:30 p.m. today for the first night of Hanukkah. The lighting will take place outside the State College Municipal Building, 243 S. Allen St., and free latkes, hot chocolate, music, games, dancing and crafts will be provided.

Penn State Hillel will host a Hanukkah celebration, available for all ages, at 9 p.m. at the Candy Bar and Lounge, 129 S. Pugh St., with gourmet food, games, prizes and a DJ.

Chabad will also host a Hanukkah party at the Chabad House: Jewish Student Center, 324 E. Prospect Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The event will include a guest speaker, dinner and a candle-lighting ceremony.

The center will also provide free menorahs and will be open for students to light them after sundown throughout Hanukkah.

In addition, Hillel will hold a candle-lighting tomorrow, Thursday and Friday after sundown in 118 Pasquerilla Spiritual Center.
