Bracelets raise funds with more popularity
The column ("Bracelet craze shows fashion takes over charity," Wed., Dec. 1) was nothing more than a self-proclaimed "I'm better than you because I crochet blankets" cry for attention. Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong bracelets are not intended to be a fashion trend; they're a statement. Most of those who wear these bracelets are not wearing them because they think they look "cool." I proudly wear mine every day as a reminder that we can beat cancer. I lost my father almost two years ago to this horrible disease, have a grandmother who is a survivor, and a best friend who is a survivor at age 23. Let's realize that just because people wear these bracelets doesn't mean that they're not giving to charity in other ways. They don't feel the need to announce to everyone that they donate to charities. People who don't have the time to give to worthy causes express themselves in other manors, such as wearing a LiveStrong bracelet. These bracelets have contributed more than $20 million to the Lance Armstrong foundation for cancer research. What difference does it make if the foundation raised money by selling rubber bracelets? That foundation may find a cure that could save you or a loved one from cancer one day. Elise Berens
