Balanced attack key in win for Lady Lions

Collegian Staff Writer

Three minutes into the second half, the Penn State women's basketball team extended its lead to 46-27 off a Jen Harris lay-up, but Tanisha Wright lay on the floor grabbing her leg under the George Mason basket.

Wright stayed down for a few seconds, wincing, but walked off the bruise, giving Associate Head Coach Annie Troyan a wave to indicate that she wasn't coming out. The Patriots passed the ball inbounds, but before they could even cross halfcourt Jess Strom stole the ball and pushed it up to Wright at the foul line.

Wright pulled off a ridiculous spin move to get closer to the hoop and connected with a short jumper. The crowd let out a collective gasp in awe, then rose to its feet. The Lady Lions couldn't be stopped last night, with four players scoring in double-figures.

"The balance scoring is something that sticks out to me," Troyan said. "They're improving. I'm pleased with the balance in scoring we got. It wasn't just the Jess and T show. Amanda came and played tonight, and so did Jen Harris."

Harris had a career night, scoring, with 19 points, tying Wright for the game high. Harris' performance was a huge leap forward compared to her previous outing against Duquesne, where she was benched in the second half, playing only three minutes.

Troyan said Harris was just to one-dimensional against the Dukes.

"It was based on the fact that she thought scoring was the only thing I wanted," Troyan said.

"After the last game she was a little concerned when I took her out in the second half. She and I had a discussion on this, what she needed to do to improve, and play more consistent. We spoke about, 'You need to contribute in other ways. You need to rebound and help us on the defensive end.' It can't always be put into T's hands."

On defense, Troyan matched-up Harris with George Mason's Tracy Ann Holness, the Patriots leading scorer coming into last night's game.

Harris answered Troyan's challenge, limiting Holness to only 3-of-13 shooting.

"I said, 'You have a challenge tonight, defensively,' " Troyan said. " 'If you can do the job there, the other half will just happen.' She really stepped it up."
