Paper needs to cover more diversity issues

Your in-depth piece on diversity ("Diversity doesn't filter outside classroom" Thurs., Dec. 2) failed to mention something. Diversity doesn't filter through the pages of The Daily Collegian, either. All semester, the Collegian has ignored several great speeches by African-Americans, most notably, the speech of former President Clinton aide Lani Guinier. Other speakers, such as author Bebe Campbell, received the back-page treatment. Diversity student organizations have also received little coverage. They have produced a multitude of diversity forums and programs throughout the semester. But unless the programs involved eating or dancing, they usually didn't appear in the Collegian. And you just love to show us dancing. You also provided front-page pictures of us playing cards and selling each other off at date auctions. It's insulting to know you don't provide the same effort to cover real issues within our communities. Hopefully, you will wake up and see that your ways only contribute to this "filtering" problem. If not, the students of diversity at Penn State may have to take news coverage matters into our own hands.
