PSU guard nominated for Senior CLASS award

Penn State's Tanisha Wright added to her already-long list of accolades when she was nominated for the Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award. Wright, who has also been named to the watch lists for the Wade Trophy and John R. Wooden Player of the Year Awards, also snagged preseason All-Big Ten and Street & Smith Terrific Ten honors earlier this year.

Last season, Wright, who is currently leading the Big Ten in scoring at 20.5 ppg, won her second straight Big Ten Defensive Player of Year and was named to the Associated Press honorable mention All-America team.

Former Lady Lion standout Kelly Mazzante was a finalist for the Senior CLASS award last season.

The top 30 male and female college basketball players entering their senior season have been nominated for the fourth annual Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award. The award is presented annually to the nations senior player-of-the-year for NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball.

The Senior Class Award -- an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School -- was launched in the 2001-02 college basketball season. It is designed to honor the attributes of seniors who remain committed to their university and elect to pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring.

3 Nittany Lions named Academic All-Americans

Senior free safety Andrew Guman has been selected a first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America football player, Penn State's 25th student-athlete to be so honored. Members of CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America, selected Guman to the prestigious team.

A trio of Nittany Lions -- senior fullback Paul Jefferson, sophmore linebacker Paul Posluszny and Guman -- had been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Football Team. The All-District nod was the third of Guman's career. A native of Allentown, Pa., Guman is the 23rd Nittany Lion under Coach Joe Paterno to earn first team Academic All-America honors.

Guman has the squad's highest grade point average with a 3.77 in finance. He finished third on the team with 67 tackles (43 solo). He recorded 6.5 tackles for minus-22 yards, good for fourth on the squad, with one sack, one fumble recovery and seven pass break-ups.

A former standout at Allentown Central Catholic High School, Guman also will be a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He is on schedule to graduate in May 2005.
