Last weekend while I gave in to all temptations and exercised my right to shop 'til I eventually dropped from exhaustion, I found myself in a most peculiar predicament.
As I walked around shops, I came across some beautiful shirts -- or were they dresses/skirts?
That became the question of the day as I tried on garment after glorious garment. Was it a hoochie-mama skirt to be worn with pumps, bare gams and a divalicious attitude, or a way-below-the-waist shirt needing to be teamed up with booty tight jeans?
This trend of long shirt-skirt, otherwise known as a shkirt, reached our parts sometime between last spring and this summer.
And it was last spring that I purchased a hot pink and black-lace shkirt and wore it -- rather inappropriately -- as a skirt to a formal. Though my bum was bordering on exposed, my mom told me it looked adorable, which I believe it did (think Barbie). And I got away with it because outrageous is how I do.
And since then it has exploded like crazy, causing me to say, "Holla! Hold up I need to examine."
What is so fascinating to me is how vastly the tides have turned. It was not so long ago that navels were being pierced left and right and it was all about mimicking belly-bare pop tarts. A bare stomach wasn't so much a fashion choice but a fashion must.
But now, we have options. You don't have to do the ol' thing and bare your abs and shimmy with your belly-jelly. Hit up a shkirt that hugs your upper. Or find something more blasé and chill like a style villain in class.
As I prodded through racks and racks of clothing last weekend, I came across all sorts of -- shall we say "genres" -- of these fascinating chemises. I purchased a few shkirts, all of them quite evidently not skirts, unless you're really into upside down butt-cleavage, which FYI, is even a bigger no-no then right side up butt-cleavage.
Don't fear ladies: There are ample ways to look glam, sexy or pretty in pink with shkirts. It isn't just about packing sassin' heat where the assets are; there are plenty of cotton casual, silk floral or even sweater-soft types, all of which are super-duper any day. One of my favorite shkirts is skank-tight on top and loose on the bottom, while another is lax up, down and all around.
They come slim fit, prim and proper, loose and nonchalant -- it's as you like it.
It's all love.
