Paterno finishes second in all-time coach survey

Penn State's Joe Paterno has been selected as the second-best college football coach of all-time in the "Dell Presents College Football's 10 Greatest Coaches" survey. An expert panel of more than 300 media, current and former football coaches, Heisman Trophy winners and members of the College Football Hall of Fame made the selections, in addition to thousands of online voters.

Paterno finished second to Paul "Bear" Bryant, whose Division I-A victories record he broke in 2001. Eddie Robinson, Bobby Bowden and Knute Rockne completed the top five.

Preparing for his 40th season as head coach of the Nittany Lions, Paterno is second in all-time victories among major college coaches and fourth in wins across all four NCAA divisions. A member of the Penn State coaching staff for 55 years, Paterno owns a 343-116-3 (0.745) career record. He has led Penn State to two national championships (1982, '86), five unbeaten and untied seasons (1968, '69, '73, '86, '94) and is the all-time leader in bowl appearances (31) and victories (20-10-1 record).

Paterno's squad won its final two games of 2004, including a 37-13 victory over Michigan State in the season finale, and returns 19 starters for the 2005 season.
