Restricting speech endangers freedoms
In regard to Elizabeth Hunt's column ("Students need to think before using certain words" Fri., Nov. 19), these "Suzies" and "Bobs" that you overheard talking at the HUB the other day at lunch, were they giving a speech in a class? Were they interviewing for a job? Were they representing Penn State at a conference? Were they even talking to you? They weren't? So what you're saying is that you were eavesdropping on other students' conversations and you were "ashamed" about how they were talking to each other in private conversations? With "Offensive speech hurts students' rights on campus," and now "Students need to think before using certain words," you have penned a pair of op-eds favoring the restriction of certain people's rights in order to protect other people's rights. Are you starting to see the problem with what you're espousing? I suggest you take your own advice and "think before you speak." Ty Torres
