USG should publicize itself during the fall

I am writing in response to the recent opinions about many students not being interested in student government due to the bickering. How true! The masses of students are not satisfied with a few victories in the face of staggering internal strife. Why won't students get involved? Here's a list: First, lack of freshmen involvement. The most publicized time of year is election time, which occurs in the spring when the incoming freshmen are finishing high school. While this is a necessity due to senior graduation, no event is held in the fall to showcase the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) to the incoming freshmen, a time when young students are looking to get involved and be a part of a group on campus. Second, unclear structure. Except for people looking for that extra challenge, why join a group who has multiple parts that seemingly do not work together if not against each other? Three, non-existent public relations. In seven years as a student at Penn State, the only times I have heard anything about USG are elections, a campaign platform victory (there are only three that stick out in my head), or Collegian reports. Students' time is limited when it comes to extracurricular activities. Most will not sift through the mire of USG to volunteer for a cause with unclear objectives. Knowledge is key. The more USG showcases projects and successes, the more support they will get from the student body and the more candidates and volunteers they will see.
