Letter to the Editor
Paper needs to cover more serious issues

This letter is in response to the front page of The Daily Collegian on Mon., Nov. 22. When is the Collegian going to have a massive front-page picture and article on anything but football? It's embarrassing that our "independent" student newspaper is really university propaganda more or less. When will you tackle issues like torture committed by our government? When will you take a stand on something significant? It is a tradition of university students worldwide to stand up for injustice and create real, tangible changes in their governments.

Students our age, and younger than us have overthrown countless oppressive regimes in South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Perhaps they were not as tranquilized by beer and football. Perhaps they were more empathetic and passionate. Perhaps they were not products of administrative control. Perhaps they were not scared to stand up about something real.

The day I see a huge picture of torture on the front page of the Collegian is the day I will gain respect for this newspaper. The day that the Undergraduate Student Government listens, just listens, to student concerns on real issues, is the day I might gain an ounce of respect for my student representatives (who don't even substantially organize in response to rising tuition costs). We are not the leaders of "tomorrow," we are the leaders of today. It's time we started acting like it.
