NEWS

There is little disagreement over the fact that parking is an issue in downtown State College.

Soft chanting is heard floating through the lonely corridor outside the Wilkinson library in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center Friday night.

The lights were dim, soft music was playing, incense was burning and barefoot students clothed in traditional Indian garb walked in and out of the Frizzell Room, taking care of last-minute details.

Two local animal welfare organizations will get a few of their holiday wishes granted from a State College pet store.

Despite renewed controversies across the country over how the creation of the universe is taught, S. Blaire Hedges, Penn State biology professor, said the university will continue teaching the theory of evolution as it always has.

Proudly wearing his tiny Penn State jersey, 5-year-old Trent Golden threw a ball back and forth with Family Relations Captain Jay Weiss at yesterday's Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon Family Carnival.

The Beaver Canyon cameras' durability, effectiveness and upkeep costs dominated a State College Borough Council discussion with a citizens advisory committee Friday.

Although Penn State won on the field at Saturday's football game, Michigan State was victorious on the donor beds.

The State College Police Department is investigating the robbery of a Gopper's Pizza delivery driver, which was reported about 12:30 a.m. Friday and involved the theft of barbecue subs, a two-liter bottle of Coke and an undisclosed amount of money.

Police responded to a fight in progress on the 300 block of West College Avenue, which began after a man drove over a pedestrian's foot early Friday morning.

Students living on campus will have to pay an extra $300 next year for room and board after the Penn State Board of Trustees voted to approve a 4.82-percent raise in rates on Friday.

CARLISLE -- The Penn State Dickinson School of Law Board of Governors voted 25-4 Saturday to create a task force to begin negotiating terms to create a law school campus at University Park.

SPORTS

If most paths to the top of a steep mountain included a number of switchbacks, the Penn State women's swimming team took a convincing step around another Friday afternoon by defeating St. Bonaventure 172-90.

Aaron Johnson finally revealed the secret to his intensified performances.

The challenge was administered the week before in practice.

PHILADELPHIA -- Heading to Villanova, the Lady Lions were looking for a city that would love them back following two losses to top-10 teams to open the season.

In front of a standing-room-only crowd, the No. 4 Penn State women's volleyball team (25-2, 16-2 Big Ten) got one step closer to its second straight Big Ten title with a three-game sweep of Illinois (30-21, 30-28, 30-19) Saturday night.

It's an all too familiar scene for the Penn State men's basketball team.

He'd been in that seat 35 times before -- the one at the front of the first bus, right across from the head coach, the seat permanently reserved for the starting quarterback.

If there is any part of this Penn State football team for which care should be taken not to anger, the defense would, unquestionably, be it.

With the season over, the gag order was lifted. Penn State assistant coaches typically don't speak to the media under normal circumstances, but after Saturday's season finale, defensive coordinator Tom Bradley and quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno were made available.

Beaver Stadium roared, Zack Mills smiled and, for a few hours on an otherwise dreary Saturday in November, all was right again in the world of Penn State football.

It was as if the fans in Beaver Stadium thought the not-so-low-key rumors just might be true. They thought this game could be the old coach's last.

Before the Penn State women’s basketball team started its season a few weeks ago, the players and coaching staff emphasized that if the Lady Lions were to remain in the upper echelon of the NCAA this season, each and every player on the roster would have to be ready to make a significant contribution on the offensive end.

Following last weekend’s second-place finish in the first annual Pennsylvania State Dual Championships, the No. 17 Penn State wrestling team once again showed it has the talent to compete with the top teams in the nation.

So, you think you're cool?

In the end, there might be cockroaches and Cher, but there will definitely be Dolly Parton.
