Letter to the Editor
Happiness does not equate to big salary

After reading Vern "real major" Trageser's letter ("Tingley needs to talk about real issues" Thurs., Nov. 18), we find it necessary to support our main man: Allen Tingley. Call us "those kids making under $50,000 post-graduation," or call us slackers; the point is that Tingley's column is not "filled with dumb ideas." You argue that work pays off because engineers make $20,000 more than English majors post-graduation. What does this have to do with amount of work? An engineering major with mathematical/scientific talent may obtain a perfect GPA without much work or an English major may study constantly for a perfect GPA. The engineer will make more money; this has more to do with the nature of one's occupation than one's effort. If success is equal to salary then movie stars and pro athletes are the most successful people. Bob Dylan said, "A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do." Tingley did not claim that work is worthless; he identified balance as the key for a full life. Your disagreement with Tingley's opinion does not make him "dumb" or an awful journalist. He made you think and sometimes journalism can hit where it hurts. Tingley, keep making people think.
