I can't believe that the internal squabbling in the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) continues to be a front-page issue at Penn State. Is this really one of the most important issues on campus? I think it's about time we recognize that USG is nothing more than a playground for political science majors and other students interested in pretend government. The only reason this organization exists is so that people who were part of their senior class government in high school can still feel important at Penn State. It's all part of this "I'm not just a number, I make a difference here" mentality that everybody wants to feel for some reason. However, the fact is that USG does absolutely nothing productive, and the only time it affects student life is at election time when we are all bombarded with wasteful fliers and irritating advertising campaigns. I'm not saying that student government is a bad idea. In fact, it's a superb idea. A group of students who come together to promote the goals of the student population and actually improve the campus would be excellent, and I would see no problem using student fees to fund such a group.
However, we don't seem to have that at Penn State. All we ever hear about is a group of bickering, bike-stealing kids who never get a single thing done and are wasting student money just by keeping their little political sandbox alive. I can't believe people get scholarship money for this stuff.
