Woman arraigned on theft charges

Chassidy Zella of Altoona was arraigned yesterday on charges of retail theft and receiving stolen property in connection with a Sept. 8 robbery at Wal-Mart, 1665 N. Atherton St.

According to witnesses, a woman with blonde hair attempted to load the merchandise into her car when an employee tried to stop her and a struggle ensued.

Police said the employee was able to recover two items totaling $442.88.

However, according to witnesses, the woman was able to place two bags full of merchandise into her vehicle.

According to the complaint, a witness was later able to match Zella's picture to the video surveillance from Wal-Mart. Zella has been placed in Centre County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Swift launch delayed until at least Sat.

The launch of Penn State's Swift Gamma Ray Burst Explorer has been delayed for the second time this week due to continuing equipment concerns.

Mission managers met yesterday and set the NASA-funded space observatory's launch for no earlier than tomorrow at 12:10 p.m.

Swift was set to take off shortly after noon Wednesday from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. But concerns arose while engineers were making final checks to the launch equipment hours before launch time.

Swift team workers were to replace necessary parts on the launch vehicle yesterday, and then retest the entire system today.
