Tingley needs to talk about "real" issues
This is in response to the last few columns by Allen Tingley, sorry I haven't had a chance to write this earlier, I have a real major and therefore must do a lot of work. The last few of Tingley's columns have been the worst pieces of journalism I have ever read. Earlier, he decided that anyone who can't take an entire day of class off has a problem. They have technical-based majors and can't afford to miss class. Tingley told us that there is no correlation between hard work and success. I beg to differ, and I have numbers to prove my argument. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employer's 2004 survey, the average starting salary for a mechanical engineer is over $50,000, while an English major pulls in under $30,000. As I stated earlier, people with technical majors have more work to do than most people, and can't skip entire days of class on a whim. Thus, I would say it is reasonable to assume that hard work does lead to success. Tingley, you have a powerful voice on the opinion page, please do something worthwhile with it and stop writing absurd columns filled with your dumb ideas, and only a fool would complain about a day off (fall break).
