Letter to the Editor
Symantec Antivirus not really effective

This letter is in regard to an article on Friday ("Computer users unaware of viruses" Fri., Nov. 12). I think that the article had lots of great advice, but there is a problem that I think should be made known. The free antivirus program that Penn State provides (Symantec Antivirus), and that we were all told to install over our antivirus software, isn't as effective as other antivirus programs. If you have scanned your computer multiple times using Symantec you may have noticed that it rarely finds threats. If an antivirus program is telling you that it isn't finding anything, despite how much Web surfing you do, there is a problem. I brought back my old antivirus program and checked my computer, it found more than a dozen problems, while Symantec didn't find anything. The point is that Symantec isn't as efficient as you would hope an antivirus program would be. There are many free antivirus programs on the Web that do an amazing job at keeping your computer virus-free, such as AVG Antivirus. If your computer is running smoothly using only Symantec, then I guess you can get away with a weak antivirus program. But if you have kinks, long download times, and Symantec is finding nothing, then I suggest you scan your computer with another antivirus program, all it takes is a Google search.
