NEWS

For children who have nothing to look forward to on the holidays, all it takes is a few small gifts -- small enough to fit in a shoebox -- to make their Christmas bright.

As the holiday season nears, making travel plans is one item on some students' to-do lists.

Arts and crafts, balloons and children's voices filled HUB Heritage Hall yesterday, while outside, children with paint-covered hands waited anxiously to decorate the welcome banner.

A former Penn State student charged with breaking into a woman's dorm room in 2003 pleaded guilty to those charges on Friday.

Forget the big blue and white vans.

Watch out, Broadway. From Saturday Night Fever to Chicago, members of the greek community sang, danced and acted their way through shortened versions of Broadway musicals at the 19th annual Greek Sing competition yesterday.

Dressed in a fuzzy brown bodysuit, Tom Zikos walked into Rec Hall with a furry head and dangling floppy ears tucked under his arm.

SPORTS

It's amazing what can change in less than 24 hours.

At 5-foot-6, Maryland goalkeeper Nikki Resnick may not appear scary or intimidating, but her performance yesterday will be giving the Penn State women's soccer team nightmares for a long time.

Needing a top-two finish in Saturday's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet to advance to the national championships, the Penn State men's cross country team had to rely on a great race from its first to its last finisher.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- By any sort of odds, it was all over. Done. The six-point lead Penn State had over Indiana would be promptly turned into a one-point, last-minute victory for the Hoosiers with a simple 1-yard touchdown dash and an easy extra point.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Penn State coach Joe Paterno promised it. Senior quarterback Zack Mills expected it. Fans have been calling for it.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Appropriate, isn't it, that Penn State -- the school most vocal about utilizing instant replay in the Big Ten -- would need its services to achieve its first victory in the conference this season.

We don't lose at home!

No matter how much the two seniors tried, there was not enough of Tanisha Wright and Jess Strom to make up for the rest of the Lady Lions.

No matter how long Amanda Lentz and Stephanie Pezzullo tried to bury their faces in the Jeffrey Field turf, it wouldn't make this one sink in any faster.

The stage was set all morning for the matchup between the No. 17 Penn State wrestling team (2-1) and No. 2 Lehigh (4-0) in the finals of the first ever Pennsylvania State Dual Championships.

For the first 32 minutes, the game was very seesaw in nature; it was as if no team wanted to take control.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- They believed they could stop them. Probably about as much as they ever believed they could do anything in this dizzying and unsteadying season.
