I serve as a Town Senator for the Undergraduate Student Government (USG). Last week, the Collegian editorial board ("USG should take aim at issues that matter rather than cameras" Fri., Nov. 12) criticized our efforts to learn more about the cameras watching students downtown and on campus. They say it is "really not an issue." The opinion piece was incorrect. Second, cameras are an issue -- now more than ever. The op-ed states that USG formed a committee to learn the locations of cameras. This is wrong. We have no interest in undermining the effectiveness of cameras. Senate held a discussion about maintaining the anonymity of these cameras. The goal of the committee is to voice students' concerns, as well as to ask for ethical standards. When placing a camera, Penn State has no process to review privacy concerns. This is something students deserve and this is an issue they care about, as the number of cameras continues to increase. The Penn State administration is filled with hard-working individuals, and has no intention of invading our privacy. But students across campus deserve these ethical standards. Our efforts are anything but "futile." This is a victory for students.
