In response to Thomas Schmitt's letter ("Sex education won't help abortion rates" Fri., Nov. 12), I'd like to say if you knew anything about the process of pregnancy you'd realize that health of the fetus can and should be considered a basis for abortion. I know someone who had an abortion because of the health of her baby. She knew it would not survive. Now before you go stereotyping this person as a naive teenager, I'll have you know she is currently 39. A few years previous to her abortion she had a stillborn baby girl. If you knew this amazing woman, you'd know that this caused trauma in her life. When she found out her new baby would meet a similar fate, that is something she didn't want to go through again.
Who are you or anyone else to judge? You will never know what it's like to give birth and hold a baby who is already dead, before it had a chance to live. If you could experience this, knowing the second time around, that the fetus inside you would not make it, you may think twice about your views. A woman should be entitled to her own choices, and please bear in mind, they aren't always selfish.
