Greek Sing takes center stage

Collegian Staff Writers

Watch out, Broadway. From Saturday Night Fever to Chicago, members of the greek community sang, danced and acted their way through shortened versions of Broadway musicals at the 19th annual Greek Sing competition yesterday.

Kate Trotman, Greek Sing public and student relations overall chair, said this year's theme of "Bring in 'Da Stars, Bring In 'Da Show" featured more modern musicals.

The crowd of about 1,900 watched for nearly three and a half hours of performances, some of which featured sequin-covered costumes, puppets and a cappella solos.

Out of 19 performances, the overall winner and crowd favorite was Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, 234 E. Beaver Ave., and Pi Beta Phi sorority's rendition of Movin' Out, which included a live band playing Billy Joel's hits onstage.

"We really decided if we were going to make the show over the top, we had to put the band on the stage," said Rudy Lasher, a member of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and a performer in the show.

Kappa Alpha Order fraternity also won best overall performance last year. They began practice a week before the other competing organizations to work out their complex dance moves, Lasher said.

Lindsay Driver, Greek Sing chair for Pi Beta Phi sorority, said the experience was nerve-racking for the choreographers.

"I think we were more nervous than the performers," she said.

Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and Zeta Psi fraternity, 225 E. Foster Ave., won second place overall and first place in the spirit competition.

"It was a long journey," Zeta Psi Greek Sing chair Evan Cohen said. "We've been practicing for four or five weeks straight now. It all paid off; everybody worked so hard, so we definitely expected something in the top three."

Mike Knuff, winner of the best male lead award and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, 524 Locust Lane, awed the judges and the crowd, who began to clap along to his a cappella solo, "Stayin' Alive."

Knuff, a senior who has been participating in Greek Sing for several years, said despite his experience, he was still nervous before performing.

"You always get stage fright right before you go onstage," he said.

Knuff said although he was happy he won best male lead, he was disappointed his fraternity and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority placed fourth overall.

"I personally think we could've came in first," he said. "[Kappa Alpha fraternity and Pi Beta Phi sorority] were good, but I think we were pretty good, too."

Trotman said she was happy with the energy of the performances.

"I think every performer gave it their all, and it showed," she said.

Each year, Greek Sing raises money to give scholarships to "outstanding Panhellenic women" through the Gayle Beyers Scholarship. This year, two $800 awards and three $250 awards were given.
