Three Lions named to academic district team
Sports in brief

A trio of Penn Staters -- Andrew Guman, Paul Jefferson and Paul Posluszny -- have been named to the Academic All-District Football Team as selected by members of CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America.

All three are first team All-District selections and eligible for consideration for the Academic All-America team. Guman was selected Academic All-District for the third consecutive year.

Penn State has had 24 first team Academic All-America football players, 22 under Coach Joe Paterno. The Nittany Lions have had a total of 32 Academic All-American football players, to rank fourth among all Division I-A institutions.

Guman, a senior, has the squad's highest grade point average with a 3.77 in finance. He started the initial eight games of the season at free safety and is third on the team with 57 tackles (38 solo). He has 6.0 tackles for minus-21 yards, tied for third on the squad, with one sack, one fumble recovery and seven pass break-ups.

Jefferson, a fifth-year senior has started eight games at fullback this season. He has 13 receptions for 82 yards and three carries for three yards. Jefferson earned his degree in secondary education in May and working on completing a second degree in sociology. He owns a 3.24 grade point average.

Posluszny, a sophomore, has started every game at outside linebacker and leads the Nittany Lions with 76 tackles (35 solo).

He is second on the squad with 8.0 tackles for minus-29 yards, has two sacks, one forced fumble and two pass break-ups. Posluszny owns a 3.63 grade point average.
