Reading Brett Nadan's letter ("Abortions will occur regardless of legality" Thurs., Nov. 11) I felt the need to respond. Nadan first describes the pro-life movement as a "knee-jerk" reaction to "killing babies." I must ask, what should the response be to killing babies be if not reactionary? Nadan then explains to us his view on abortion. Defending his position with his knee-jerk reasons, such as rape, incest and the health of the mother. These circumstances are not the impetus for the majority of abortions. I found it curious his choice to include the health of the fetus as a basis for abortion. Last I checked, being aborted was the most detrimental health condition you could have as a fetus.
As for Roe v. Wade, if you want to protect the rights of women, make a law. Don't depend on advocate judges to continue to support a controversial ruling. Rights were not allowed to be protected by the interpretation of a judge. Nadan then tells us overturning Roe v. Wade would be meaningless since abortions would happen anyway. Nadan needs to realize that the reason laws are established is because something happened and will continue to happen. Murder, robbery, extortion, all continue to happen even though we have laws prohibiting them. Finally Naden says that education and contraceptives will lower the number of abortions. Most abortions happen after high school, so if we can't trust an adult to operate a condom how do we expect a 13-year-old to know how?
