Letter to the Editor
Bush needs to have strong moral values

I strongly disagree with the editorial cartoon yesterday (Wed., Nov. 10) that depicted Betsy Ross sewing crosses instead of stars onto Old Glory, with a picture of President George W. Bush nearby. The premise is that a man cannot use his principles, developed by religion, to guide his life. Not including the gay marriage amendment, the only overtly religious thing he has done is to enact faith-based initiatives. Helping the poor, that screams religious oppression. The basic fact is that the left in general would like to deny that we are a Christian country, which has a law system based on Judeo-Christian values. I am not religious, but I went to church all my life and can tell you that I learned right from wrong in that sanctuary, whether or not I disagreed with some of the teachings. The government should not impose religion, but it is ridiculous to argue that it is not part of the make up of our country. You could argue that Bush has been a force for moderation. Look at Afghanistan, it was once ruled by fundamentalist Islamic tyrants and now has free elections, and a far greater degree of religious tolerance. When has a secular leftist achieved freedom for 28 million people from a religious dictatorship?
