Excitement, pride and team spirit filled Beaver Canyon yesterday afternoon immediately after the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-3.

From holding signs and towels to yelling cheers, the estimated 350-person crowd gathered on the four corners of Beaver Avenue and Locust Lane for more than an hour after the game.

"They've just kind of been giving it to each other," State College Police Chief Tom King said.

Cheers from the rowdy Steelers' fans ranged from the usual "Here we go Steelers, here we go" to singing along to the "Pittsburgh's going to the Super Bowl" song blasting from Kappa Sigma fraternity, 255 Highland Ave., to mocking the Eagles' chant by yelling "L-O-S-E-R-S, losers!" Several students supporting the Steelers also performed Hines Ward's touchdown dance while crossing the street.

State College police responded to the scene immediately, but decided not to clear the area right away.

"We're just letting them stay here for a little while," Sgt. Christian Fishel said.

Although the Steelers had a 27-3 victory, some Eagles' fans said they went to Canyon Pizza, 260 E. Beaver Ave., because they thought Steelers' fans would be there and wanted to show support for the Eagles.

Pittsburgh Steelers' fans Jackie Marshall (senior-crime, law and justice), left, Chad Cooper (senior-biology) and Cristina Feather (senior-anthropology) cheer on a Cedarbrook balcony following the Pittsburgh Steelers' win over the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-3.

"It kind of started with us," John Boyle (senior-supply chain and information systems) said. "We stopped and we started talking a little bit."

Others wanted to taunt the opposing team as well.

"[I came to] make fun of Steelers fans and to show support for the [Eagles]." John Gavigan (senior-history) said.

Most of the Steelers fans gathered in front of Alexander Court, 309 E. Beaver Ave., and Cedarbrook, 320 E. Beaver Ave., while Eagles fans stood in front of Penn Tower, 255 E. Beaver Ave.

"I had to support the team," Dan Hoffman (senior-finance) said. "I heard there was a big party near Cedarbrook."

Kristin Massimino (sophomore-accounting) said she decided to join in the celebration when she saw the crowd.

"I'm the most amazing [Steelers] fan in the world," she said. "We made [the Eagles] look like they were idiots."

Because a lot of students are from Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, celebrations like the one yesterday are likely to happen, King said.

"Anytime you get two Pennsylvania teams [playing] this can happen," he added.

Some of the night shift officers came in early to help control the crowd, however there were no arrests.

"Celebrations we can handle, riots we can't," King said.
