Lions beat Indiana, set to face Illinois

Collegian Staff Writer

Leave it to someone who has never played in the Big Ten tournament to end the mini-slump for the No. 3 Penn State (17-1-1) women's soccer team.

Freshman midfielder Aubrey Aden-Buie scored her first career goal in the 64th minute for the first of two Penn State scores. The Nittany Lions went on to blank No. 8 seed Indiana (9-7-3), 2-0 at Ohio State.

Yesterday's win sets up a second round matchup today between the top-seeded Lions and the fourth seed Illinois at 4:30 p.m.

Junior forward Tiffany Weimer scored her 23rd goal of the season just 63 seconds after Aden-Buie's to seal a game that was dominated by the motivated Lions.

"We were really determined," Weimer said. "My class hasn't gotten out of the first round ever. I guess the third time's the charm."

After being ousted as the top seed the previous two Big Ten tournaments, the Lions started the game hungry to erase past mistakes. They out-shot Indiana 14-2 in the first half, including seven on goal. "We increased the tempo a little after the start and kind of figured out what Indiana was giving us better" Penn State women's soccer coach Paula Wilkins said.

Not scoring in the first half is not a rarity for Penn State this season, as 31 of 46 goals coming into the game were in the second half. The Lions' best chance to score in the first half came when Ali Krieger's shot was blocked by an Indiana defender in front of an open net.

"[Indiana] played us well for the first 40 minutes or so," Weimer said. "We started breaking them down and eventually we just took control."

Fresh off being named the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Year, Weimer was active all game and got things started midway through the second half. Weimer sent a crossing pass from the right side which eventually found it's way to Aden-Buie, who knocked it past Indiana goalie Lauren Fabbro.

Penn State's Tiffany Weimer's 23 goals and 10 assists earned her Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Fabbro had a busy day in net with 11 saves, and the shots didn't stop after the initial strike. After sophomore midfielder Sarah Dwyer's shot hit the post, Weimer was right there to score in her 12th straight game. Her goal also ties her with Heidi Drummond for third on the career goal list, with 56.

For Penn State's goalie, Erin McLeod, it was another boring day with no shots. In this case, boring translates to wins, and yesterday's shutout is the Lions' 10th straight. The Hoosiers didn't get a shot on net after 10:58 into the game.

"It means the world to us," junior defender Natalie Jacobs said of the defensive effort. "Every game we want to get a shutout and we do whatever we can to keep them out of the goal."

The win ties the school-record unbeaten streak of 18, which was set by the 2000 team. To have the record to themselves the Lions must beat an Illinois team that knocked out Northwestern 5-0 yesterday.

Earlier this season the Lions beat the Fighting Illini 2-0 on goals by Weimer. Wilkins says the strategy doesn't change the second time around.

"No, we're not really gonna change much," Wilkins said. "They're dangerous up front so we'll need to put pressure on them.

If the Lions are able to advance past Illinois they will play for the tournament championship on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The championship game will be aired on CSTV. Penn State has not won the Big Ten tournament since 2001.
