The rematch with Ohio provided the Icers with some welcomed adversity for the first time all year.
In both games the Icers had a lead and lost it. They came back and tied the game, and lost the lead once more. And in the end, the team came out with the final and most important goal.
"We came out of this weekend with the best of both worlds, we played well enough to win in overtime ... but we also made enough mistakes that we could of lost both those games," coach Joe Battista said.
As a coach, Battista knows that correcting mistakes is much easier after a win than a loss, especially when that win comes against a quality opponent.
Penn State is a team that's known for ending other teams' unbeaten streaks.
This past weekend, it was Ohio, and the last time Rhode Island came to the Greenberg Ice Pavilion, its unblemished record became tarnished as well.
The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Icers, completely controlling the opening period.
The Icers would come from behind in that game, eventually pulling away 7-2.
"Rhode Island is a different kind of team, they're a skilled team with a lot of speed and an outstanding goaltender," Battista said.
And that's why he knows his team can't afford to have a let down.
The Icers have recently rewarded two of their players who have contributed quality leadership skills on and off the ice.
Senior scoring threat Kevin Jaeger was promoted to co-captain alongside previously deemed captain, Eric Harbaugh. And State College's own Teague Willits-Kelley has been elevated to assistant captain.
