Letter to the Editor
Rights violations still horrific after election

I'm deeply concerned about the current use of the word "unity" as used by President George W. Bush, Sen. John Kerry and even the editorial board of The Daily Collegian. There is nothing noble about supporting a human rights violator. In fact, it is extremely dangerous. The current administration has committed horrible human rights abuses in Iraq at Abu Ghraib, at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and even against its citizens in the United States through the Patriot Act -- human rights abuses that are the result of orders from the top, not "just a few bad seeds." The U.S. had a chance to send a strong message of disgust about these abuses, and unfortunately it did not. But just because this human rights violator is re-elected, there is no reason to support him or to follow twisted meanings of unity. As human beings and members of a democracy, it is our responsibility to stand up during injustice and be a voice for the voiceless. We shall never be silenced by twisted definitions of unity and support. I am disgusted with the Collegian's editorial ("Students need to keep political energy going into second Bush term" Thurs., Nov. 4) yesterday -- it is only a mimicking superficial rhetoric. This is an embarrassment. The same paper, which so strongly criticized Bush on his human rights record just one week ago, is supporting him today.
