College students too apathetic to politics

Why don't politicians care about students? I'd say that yesterday's article ("Some students choose not to vote" Thurs., Nov. 4) shows us exactly why they don't care. In one of the most hotly contested elections in recent years, and in what is possibly the most important election of our lifetime, our demographic doesn't care. Only 10 percent of people between the ages of 18 and 21 voted. Quotes such as those in the article give anecdotal evidence of voter apathy even here. This year's presidential election pitted two candidates with diametrically opposing viewpoints against each other. I simply cannot understand how people could be indecisive. Certainly nobody could be shallow enough to not care about any of the issues that were addressed at length during this campaign. Of course, much has been made about the possibility of a draft. Maybe people have forgotten that this president will likely appoint multiple people to the Supreme Court during his term in office. These appointments will affect the laws of our country for decades. Also, maybe I'm missing something, but why is a bio-engineering major incapable of deciphering a voter registration form? These things aren't all that difficult. One of the students interviewed mentioned his freedom of choice. That freedom is something that was at stake during this election, but somehow he didn't see fit to vote to protect it. Voting is not just a choice. It's a duty -- one that our generation has, yet again, failed to carry out.
