Bragging rights up for grabs
Sports fans plan for Eagles-Steelers matchup

Collegian Staff Writer

The time has finally arrived for this year's biggest football game, and all of State College is on the edge of its seat in anticipation.

But it isn't Penn State's game against Northwestern tomorrow.

While the Nittany Lions struggle to finish their dismal season, this weekend they will be playing second fiddle to a heated contest between the NFL's top two teams, who just happen to reside in Pennsylvania.

The Pittsburgh Steelers host the Philadelphia Eagles at 1 p.m. Sunday in a battle featuring two Super Bowl-hungry cities.

Brian Henderson (senior-civil and environmental engineering) is planning on attending the game on behalf of his dedication to the Steelers, and there is no confusion about his rooting interest. "It's no question who is going to win this game," he said. "The Steelers are gonna kill [the Eagles], and it will be a romp like last weekend [when the Steelers beat the New England Patriots]. We're going to run all over them with Duce [Staley]. He was a huge acquisition for us, and we know how to use him right, unlike the Eagles did."

Henderson said he is most surprised with the consistency of Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and it is because of the rookie and his arm that the Steelers are doing so well.

"Coming into the season, there was no way I thought that [Roethlisberger] would play, let alone be this successful," Henderson said. "But both he and the offensive line have been playing great football lately."

If there is one person who Eagles fans are completely sick of hearing about, it is Roethlisberger, according to longtime fan Todd Wengert (senior-finance). "I'd like to see [the Eagles] sack Roethlisberger like 20 times so that everybody will stop hyping him," Wengert said. "By the end of this weekend, I'll be able to tell Steeler fans what they don't want to hear: 'Now we know who the better team is.' "

Wengert is planning on going to the Sports Café, 244 W. College Ave., with nine of his closest Eagles allies.

"I usually watch the games in my apartment, but this is going to be a huge one," Wengert said. "I want to be surrounded by fans of both teams that are yelling and screaming at each other."

Fans who are truly seeking out that kind of yelling and screaming atmosphere need to look no further than Beulah's, 114 S. Garner St., where people will be able to choose their side in the matter.

General Manager Mark Greiner said he is anticipating a larger crowd than usual due to the scope of this matchup.

"We're dividing up the restaurant in half -- Eagles fans on one side, Steelers fans on the other -- so it's going to be a real good time," Greiner said. "We have the NFL Sunday Ticket so we always get all kinds of fans here on a weekly basis, but this time it's a little different."

Greiner said the mixed bag of fan support that is unique to State College only adds to the fun of a weekend like this.

"I've found that most of the people on my staff are Eagles fans and most of my customers are Steelers fans, so we always have a good time trading jabs at each other," Greiner said. "This is really going to be a good game, probably one of the best this season, so I'm glad that we have an opportunity to be a part of it."
