Wail of a Tale
The Wailers to bring reggae music, old and new, to PSU

For The Collegian

Reggae veterans The Wailers are coming to "stir it up" in State College on Tuesday.

The band is making a stop at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., as part of its 2004 tour along with western New York roots rock band Big Leg Emma.

"I've loved their music for a long time, and now I finally get to see them perform," said Penn State student Justin McDaniels (freshman-parks and recreation management). "I am very excited."

According to the Wailers' Web site, www.wailers.com, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer formed the Wailers in Jamaica in 1963. The Wailers remained together after Tosh and Wailer left the band in 1973 and even after Marley's death in 1981.

The Wailers are composed of an ever-evolving cast of musicians. Aston "Family Man" Barrett has taken the reins since Marley's death. Barrett is not only a bass player and singer -- he is the backbone of who the Wailers are.

According to the Web site, Barrett has been an influential part of the Wailers and reggae since the late 1960s.

He was a close confidant of Bob Marley and has worked with countless other musicians. Barrett is known for skills as a musician as well as being a skilled producer.

The set list will include many of the hits that the Wailers have been playing since their days with Bob Marley. The Web site states that the set list will also include new songs and songs that different members of the band have contributed over the years.

"A Wailers show is an amazing experience; it's deep and full of energy," said Emmanuel Santaliz (sophomore-psychology). "There is no such thing as a small Wailers show; there's about 15 people in the band and they are all into the performance."

Before the "wailing" begins, Jamestown, N.Y. band Big Leg Emma (BLE) will take the stage at Crowbar.

Formed in 2001, BLE is the effort of six musicians with very different influences, and their sound is diverse as a result.

They blend elements of bluegrass, folk, country, roots rock and reggae to form an original sound in its own realm.

"All of the members bring a lot of influence to the table. We have a lot of freedom to create our own sound," lead guitarist Kevin Rowe said.

BLE has been making a name for itself by playing many outdoor festivals and other venues in the northeast and Midwest.

"We've been opening up for some great bands recently," Rowe said.

BLE has opened for Little Feat, Rusted Root's Michael Glabicki and many others.

"We couldn't be more excited about opening for the Wailers," Rowe said.

Tickets are available at Crowbar for $15. The doors will open at 9 p.m.
